Lidl Construction Project Protected from Groundworks to Store Opening.
The Customer
Lidl is one of Europe’s largest supermarket retailers, operating around 13,000 stores across more than 30 countries. During the construction of a new store in France, the business required a flexible temporary security solution capable of protecting valuable assets throughout every stage of the build.
This project was delivered by colleagues within the VPS Group using integrated monitoring technology, including solutions from Ajax Systems.
The Challenge
Large construction sites present unique security challenges. As work progresses, site layouts change frequently, making traditional fixed security systems expensive to install, difficult to relocate and disruptive to ongoing construction activities.
For this project, valuable materials including solar panels, construction equipment and subcontractor supplies needed protecting from theft, trespass and accidental damage outside working hours. The client required a temporary security and risk management solution that could be deployed quickly, adapt as the site evolved and continue providing reliable protection without delaying the construction programme.
The Solution:
As Europe’s leading temporary security specialist, VPS Group designed and deployed an integrated security and risk management solution that combined external surveillance with intelligent life safety monitoring, providing comprehensive protection throughout every stage of the construction project.
At the heart of the solution was the RDTa (Rapidly Deployable Tower for Assets), creating a highly visible security presence while delivering autonomous, AI-enabled surveillance across the site. Equipped with four high-definition cameras, the tower provides continuous 360-degree visibility, helping to eliminate blind spots, deter unauthorised access and enable the rapid detection of suspicious activity. Operating independently of mains power, the RDTa can be deployed quickly wherever protection is needed, providing a flexible solution that evolves alongside the construction programme.
Complementing the external protection, the VPS Smart Hub+ provided intelligent monitoring within the building itself. By delivering early detection of fire, smoke, heat, carbon monoxide and water leaks, the system helped reduce the risk of costly damage, project delays and operational disruption before incidents could escalate.
Designed specifically for temporary environments, the entire solution could be installed rapidly by a single engineer and easily repositioned as construction progressed. Its wireless, modular design meant the security solution could evolve alongside the changing site without disrupting operations, ensuring continuous protection from the first day of construction through to project completion.
Remote monitoring and management reduced the need for routine site visits, while long-life battery technology helped minimise maintenance requirements, vehicle movements and associated carbon emissions.
Importantly, the solution was designed with the future in mind. Once construction was complete, the same infrastructure could be expanded and adapted to provide permanent protection for the finished supermarket, protecting the client’s investment throughout the entire asset lifecycle.
The Result
Protection began from the first day of construction and immediately demonstrated its effectiveness. On the very first night following installation, an attempted intrusion was detected and successfully deterred before any theft or damage occurred. No further intrusion incidents were recorded during the project.
By combining temporary surveillance, intelligent monitoring and life safety technologies into a single integrated solution, VPS enabled the client to focus on delivering the build while maintaining continuous protection against theft, vandalism, fire and water damage. Rather than simply responding to incidents, the solution provided a proactive approach to security and risk management throughout the construction phase.
The flexible design also ensured the solution could adapt as the project evolved before transitioning into long-term protection for the completed supermarket, delivering lasting value well beyond the build phase.
