Nicola McGarry - Regional Manager

International Women's Week - Nicola McGarry

What is your current role and how long have you been with VPS?

Regional Manager, Scotland. I have been with VPS 6 years in March.

What has been your career journey?

I joined VPS as an Administrator in March 14′. The Depot I joined (Glenrothes) was actually a stand alone business called VacMan, that VPS purchased in October 13′. Within a few months I was promoted to Senior Administrator and then Branch Manager in June 15′. Following the decision to create two management structures in April 19′ I was then offered the position of Regional Manager for VPS in Scotland which I was delighted to accept.

What made you decide on a career in Operations Management?

Having worked in Operations Admin for a long period of time I was able to see both the side of the teams on the ground and the management. I could see the challenges both faced on a daily basis and as I love a good challenge I felt I could make a real difference.

What advice would you give to someone aspiring to have a career in Operations Management?

Work hard, never be afraid to speak up and voice your opinion and trust your gut instinct every time.

What has been the most memorable achievement in your career so far?

Being given the role of Regional Manager for Scotland.

What would you like to achieve in the future?

I would like to make sure my staff get the recognition they deserve for the incredible hard work they put in every day. Ensure they have everything they need to do their job to the best of their ability and provide our Customers with the best quality and service in the industry.

What do you think is the biggest issue faced by women in the workplace today?

I believe women still struggle to be taken seriously and often have to work twice as hard to be given the same recognition.
